What is Upward Bound?
Upward
Bound is the first TRiO program and was established on September 13, 1964 and
remains the largest of the programs in terms of annual funding allocations.
Upward Bound is a pre-college cultural enrichment program designed to motivate
students by developing the skills which enable them to complete high school and
make a successful transition into postsecondary education. Services provided
include group and individual academic support, tutorial assistance, advisement,
financial aid processing assistance and clarification, and college selection
and planning assistance. Upward Bound students participate in cultural
enrichment activities and college campus tours to help them become familiar
with some of the many colleges and universities available to them. In order to
strengthen students in the areas of basic skills, the program stress
improvement in the areas of literature, mathematics, English, natural sciences,
foreign language, and study skills.

To be eligible for the Upward Bound program, a student must:
1. be a high school student residing in Williamsburg County and enrolled in grades 9 or 10 at one of the four high schools C.E. Murray, Hemingway, Kingstree, and Youth Academy; 2. meet federal income guidelines; 3. be the child of a parent who has not received his/her bachelor’s degree; 4. be committed to pursuing a 4-year college degree |

17th Annual Student Leadership Conference (WHBSLC)
On Friday January 9th
the WTC Upward Bound traveled to the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel in Columbia, S.C.,
to attend the 17th Annual Student Leadership Conference (WHBSLC). The
conference was held from the Jan. 9th – Jan.11th at the
Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. The participants were: Teneisha Watkins, Latron
Robinson, ZaRayah Shaw, Antwon Johnson, SaDazia Driffin, Tekybrien McClary
& Destiny Bruinton. The theme of this year’s conference was for the
students to “Learning How to F.L.Y.” (Find the Leader in You). They were able
to meet other students outside of Williamsburg County that were also being exposed
to positive ways of becoming a leader. There were sessions held to let them
know they were a leader and sessions showing what others have gone through to
become a leader themselves. They also participated in Emerging Leader Training,
Community Service Projects, Fashion Show, Hospitality Volunteer, &
Moderators. One participant Antwon Johnson, a senior from Kingstree Senior High
won 2nd place in the art contest.
